Sachin.... A Living Legend

When Sachin Tendulkar travelled to Pakistan to face one of the finest bowling attacks ever assembled in cricket, Michael Schumacher was yet to race a F1 car, Lance Armstrong had never been to the Tour de France, Diego Maradona was still the captain of a world champion Argentina team, Pete Sampras had never won a Grand Slam. When Tendulkar embarked on a glorious career taming Imran and company, Roger Federer was a name unheard of; Lionel Messi was in his nappies, Usain Bolt was an unknown kid in the Jamaican backwaters. The Berlin Wall was still intact, USSR was one big, big country, Dr Manmohan Singh was yet to "open" the Nehruvian economy. It seems while Father Time was having his toll on every individual on the face of this planet, he excused one man. Time stands frozen in front of our Sachin. We have had champions, we have had legends, but we have never had a Sachin Tendulkar and we never will.

21st May 1997: A date that has annoyed, irritated or in some cases tormented many a cricket fan. It was on this day that Saeed Anwar broke Viv Richards' record for the highest ever score in a One Day International. The record was thus passed on from a legend of the game to a player who was merely good, but by no stretch extraordinary - Anwar averaged 37.62 against the major nations in ODIs, and away from home his average shrank to 26.70.

Then last year, another name joined Anwar at the top of the list: Charles Coventry. Even after he scored 194 not out, a lot of people in a lot of cricketing discussions over lots of beers in lots of pubs, would still be asking: Charles who?

The anomaly at the top of the record charts was begging to be corrected. As my colleague Srivathsa said, he was waiting for this day since that fateful May night almost 13 years ago.

He was not alone. There were thousands - millions probably - who felt that the name that belonged at the top of the table was that of Sachin Tendulkar.

In what is proving to be a golden twilight of his career, Tendulkar has systematically gone about checking all the un-checked boxes in his cricketing CV. One important one was ticked when he led a mammoth fourth innings chase against England at the same ground that he had failed to complete the job against Pakistan in 1999. Another was accomplished today, with the world's highest ODI score and first ODI double-century. No other name seemed to have belonged so naturally at the top of the list than his.

Until today, Tendulkar had seemed like the logical successor to Viv Richards as the greatest ODI batsman of his generation. Not anymore.

He is now undoubtedly, the greatest ODI batsman ever. He has made the great Viv seem like a mere prelude to the real thing.

From the moment he came out to bat and stroked his first boundary to the moment when he raised his arms in triumph, in release, in acknowledgment - he looked like he was batting in a different zone. This is supposed to be a man on his last cricketing legs, but he didn't use a runner for a single minute of his innings and came out to field from the first ball to boot! With Sachin Tendulkar though, what is supposed to be and what is, don't always match.

One man is not supposed to carry the hopes of a nation of a billion every time he walks out to bat. But he does.

One man is not supposed to be the barometer of a country's happiness - he is being thrust with an impossible responsibility. But he is.

A man who makes his debut as an impressionable, precocious 16 year old is not supposed to last for 20 years as an international celebrity and not have any outrageous scandals associated with him. One man isn't supposed to display a superhuman quality of being human, if he has been granted the superhuman gifts that Sachin Tendulkar has. But he remains so.

A man is supposed to be mortal, to be granted the allowance for errors. But he isn't.

A man is not supposed to retain the same enthusiasm for a sport across more than 20 years, having spent the majority of those years under public scrutiny like no other. But he has.

I thought I had expended all possible superlatives for Sachin Tendulkar, when he completed twenty years in international cricket and I wrote this piece. I forgot, for a moment, that with Sachin Tendulkar superlatives don't ever exhaust themselves. There might come a day when Roget's Thesaurus will fail to find adequate words to describe the man, but he himself will not fail.

As he raised his arms in triumph, a country pumped its collective fist and let out a collective primeval roar. The relief, the sense of accomplishment, and the satisfaction at getting to the landmark was all the more keenly felt because for a long time now, there has been only one man who seemed capable of breaching the 200-run mark in an ODI. Sehwag has also threatened to do that, but Sehwag has never come as close as Sachin has. He made 186 not out against New Zealand at Hyderabad, but that was in an era when 300 was an almost certainly winning score. He then hit 163 not out against New Zealand a year ago, but retired with cramps. And then of course there was that heart-breaking 175 against the Aussies in November last year.

Many of us feared that his best shot at the record was gone with the end of that innings. When we, his fans, could not pick ourselves up after that shattering loss, how would he manage to do so?

However, while that loss might have broken lesser men, it seemed to spur Sachin Tendulkar on towards ensuring that such heart-break was never to be experienced again. The next time he came so close, there would be no denying him. And so he battled on. He had hit the ball with unbelievable power, and his hands must have been tiring. He had placed the ball with unbelievable dexterity, and his inventiveness must have been ebbing. He had run every single run with unwavering commitment as hard as he could - his partners' and his own - and his legs must have been sending urgent messages to his brain to let up. But nothing was going to sway him today. There had been too many golden moments snatched from him at the last moment. This one was going to be had.

The final flourish of a golden career is going considerably better than the purple patches of most other batsmen's careers. Two check-boxes remain to be ticked - a Test triple century beckons, but more than that, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar will want to keep his date with destiny on April 2nd 2011 in Mumbai.

Even if those landmarks are not achieved though, India will remain happy. He doesn't require much effort to keep India happy - all he has to do is get hold of a bat and stride out to the middle.

And so, years from now, when he has retired, we will be fondly paraphrasing Robert Browning to the next generation and the next: Sachin Tendulkar was in his batting gear and all was right with India.

Speech By Chetan Bhagat At Symboisis- Pune

Good Morning everyone and thank you for giving me this chance to speak to you.

This day is about you. You, who have come to this college, leaving the comfort of your homes (or in some cases discomfort), to become something in your life. I am sure you are excited. There are few days in human life when one is truly elated. The first day in college is one of them. When you were getting ready today, you felt a tingling in your stomach. What would the auditorium be like, what would the teachers be like, who are my new classmates - there is so much to be curious about. I call this excitement, the spark within you that makes you feel truly alive today. Today I am going to talk about keeping the spark shining. Or to put it another way, how to be happy most, if not all the time.
Where do these sparks start? I think we are born with them. My 3-year old twin boys have a million sparks. A little Spiderman toy can make them jump on the bed. They get thrills from creaky swings in the park. A story from daddy gets them excited. They do a daily countdown for birthday party â€" several months in advance â€" just for the day they will cut their own birthday cake.
I see students like you, and I still see some sparks. But when I see older people, the spark is difficult to find. That means as we age, the spark fades. People whose spark has faded too much are dull, dejected, aimless and bitter. Remember Kareena in the first half of Jab We Met vs the second half? That is what happens when the spark is lost. So how to save the spark?
Imagine the spark to be a lamp's flame. The first aspect is nurturing - to give your spark the fuel, continuously. The second is to guard against storms.
To nurture, always have goals. It is human nature to strive, improve and achieve full potential. In fact, that is success. It is what is possible for you. It isn't any external measure - a certain cost to company pay package, a particular car or house.
Most of us are from middle class families. To us, having material landmarks is success and rightly so. When you have grown up where money constraints force everyday choices, financial freedom is a big achievement. But it isn't the purpose of life. If that was the case, Mr. Ambani would not show up for work. Shah Rukh Khan would stay at home and not dance anymore. Steve Jobs won't be working hard to make a better iPhone, as he sold Pixar for billions of dollars already. Why do they do it? What makes them come to work everyday? They do it because it makes them happy. They do it because it makes them feel alive. Just getting better from current level s feels good. If you study hard, you can improve your rank. If you make an effort to interact with people, you will do better in interviews. If you practice, your cricket will get better. You may also know that you cannot become Tendulkar, yet. But you can get to the next level. Striving for that next level is important.
Nature designed with a random set of genes and circumstances in which we were born. To be happy, we have to accept it and make the most of nature's design. Are you? Goals will help you do that. I must add, don't just have career or academic goals. Set goals to give you a balanced, successful life. I use the word balanced before successful. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order.
There is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your breakup. There is no fun in driving a car if your back hurts. Shopping is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions.
You must have read some quotes - Life is a tough race, it is a marathon or whatever. No, from what I have seen so far, life is one of those races in nursery school, where you have to run with a marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming first. Same with life, where health and relationships are the marble. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die.
One last thing about nurturing the spark - don't take life seriously. One of my yoga teachers used to make students laugh during classes. One student asked him if these jokes would take away something from the yoga practice. The teacher said - don't be serious, be sincere. This quote has defined my work ever since. Whether its my writing, my job, my relationships or any of my goals. I get thousands of opinions on my writing everyday. There is heaps of praise, there is intense criticism. If I take it all seriously, how will I write? Or rather, how will I live? Life is not to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up?

It's ok, bunk a few classes, goof up a few interviews, fall in love. We are people, not programmed devices.
I've told you three things - reasonable goals, balance and not taking it too seriously that will nurture the spark. However, there are four storms in life that will threaten to completely put out the flame. These must be guarded against. These are disappointment, frustration, unfairness and loneliness of purpose.
Disappointment will come when your effort does not give you the expected return. If things don't go as planned or if you face failure. Failure is extremely difficult to handle, but those that do come out stronger. What did this failure teach me? is the question you will need to ask. You will feel miserable. You will want to quit, like I wanted to when nine publishers rejected my first book. Some IITians kill themselves over low grades â€" how silly is that? But that is how much failure can hurt you. But it's life. If challenges could always be overcome, they would cease to be a challenge. And remember - if you are failing at something, that means you are at your limit or potential. And that's where you want to be.
Disappointment' s cousin is frustration, the second storm. Have you ever been frustrated? It happens when things are stuck. This is especially relevant in India. From traffic jams to getting that job you deserve, sometimes things take so long that you don't know if you chose the right goal. After books, I set the goal of writing for Bollywood, as I thought they needed writers. I am called extremely lucky, but it took me fi ve years to get close to a release. Frustration saps excitement, and turns your initial energy into something negative, making you a bitter person. How did I deal with it? A realistic assessment of the time involved â€" movies take a long time to make even though they are watched quickly, seeking a certain enjoyment in the process rather than the end result â€" at least I was learning how to write scripts, having a side plan â€" I had my third book to write and even something as simple as pleasurable distractions in your life - friends, food, travel can help you overcome it. Remember, nothing is to be taken seriously. Frustration is a sign somewhere, you took it too seriously.
Unfairness - this is hardest to deal with, but unfortunately that is how our country works. People with connections, rich dads, beautiful faces, pedigree find it easier to make it â€" not just in Bollywood, but everywhere. And sometimes it is just plain luck. There are so few opportunities in India, so many stars need to be aligned for you to make it happen. Merit and hard work is not always linked to achievement in the short term, but the long term correlation is high, and ultimately things do work out. But realize, there will be some people luckier than you. In fact, to have an opportunity to go to college and understand this speech in English means you are pretty damm lucky by Indian standards. Let's be grateful for what we have and get the strength to accept what we don't. I have so much love from my readers that other writers cannot even imagine it. However, I don't get literary praise. It's ok. I don't look like Aishwarya Rai, but I have two boys who I think are more beautiful than her. It's ok. Don't let unfairness kill your spark.
Finally, the last point that can kill your spark is isolation. As you grow older you will realize you are unique. When you are little, all kids want Ice cream and Spiderman. As you grow older to college, you still are a lot like your friends. But ten years later and you realize you are unique. What you want, what you believe in, what makes you feel, may be different from even the people closest to you. This can create conflict as your goals may not match with others. . And you may drop some of them. Basketball captains in college invariably stop playing basketball by the time they have their second child. They give up something that meant so much to them. They do it for their family. But in doing that, the spark dies. Never, ever make that compromise. Love yourself first, and then others.
There you go. I've told you the four thunderstorms - disappointment, frustration, unfairness and isolation. You cannot avoid them, as like the monsoon they will come into your life at regular intervals. You just need to keep the raincoat handy to not let the spark die.
I welcome you again to the most wonderful years of your life. If someone gave me the choice to go back in time, I will surely choose college. But I also hope that ten years later as well, your eyes will shine the same way as they do today. That you will Keep the Spark alive, not only through college, but through the next 2,500 weekends. And I hope not just you, but my whole country will keep that spark alive, as we really need it now more than any moment in history. And there is something cool about saying - I come from the land of a billion sparks.
Thank You.

Sorry State Of Indian Affairs..... Beyond Movies

These days it seems … India is into lots of Chaos. Elections. Congress. BJP. IPL. Varun Gandhi. Everyone seems to fighting for a piece of India. The last one in this list is most desperate one.

I was really upset and out of seer frustration I told myself "Thanks God that I am not there in India to witness all this shit".But this is a feeling of disregard. Disregard of the fact that I was born in India. Disregard of fact that its my Country.

Seldom have I loved India beyond Cricket and Bollywood. I rarely got any other reason. Nuclear Test ,Chandrayan, 20K sensex, etc are the things that we come across once in a decade. And between those decades , too many things happen to force you think beyond those achievements. Thats why Patriotism, for me, rarely meant anything beyond Bollywood and Cricket. I feel over the Clouds when I see Indian Actors being hailed at Oscars and Golden Globes. It makes me a proud Indian when I see Sehwag demolishing bowling attacks all over the world. And every time I try to love India beyond Cricketers and Movie Stars…, someone starts pushing me back. Someday its Narendra Modi, someday it’s Advani, someday it’s Raj Thackeray and someday there are Shri Ram Sena Fanatics and now its Varun Gandhi. I know, many would argue that these are just bunch of unworthy Politicians. To this I will say it’s not about what these people do or say. It’s about India. India does nothing about these people. They do whatever they want. They say whatever they want. People and Media Debate for few days till they get something new to debate on.

End result. Nil. Void. India moves on, till someone strikes back again.

When Sri Ram Sena hit women with their Moral Values, entire India responded. Debates followed. TV Shows. Exclusive Reports followed by routine arrests and bails. But as expected India moved on. Moved on to prepare herself how to avoid Shri Ram Sena’s and Bajrang Dal’s ire on 14th Feb. Karnataka State Govt supported Sena. Congress Govt acted spineless. They just wished why doesn’t 14th Feb fall in Leap Year? Sena activists roam freely on the streets, teaching Moral Values every now and then. And here am advoting either Valentines's Day or Women Freedom. We will come to that, some other day. Till then be prepared for some Moral Lessons, courtsey SR Sena.

In 1942. Mahatma Gandhi gave a slogan. Quit India. It generated Revolution. India won Freedom, only to see Raj Thackeray giving another slogan in 2K8. Quit Hindi ,Quit Maharastra. Poor , hard working UPwalas and Biharis were aliens this time. It generated Chaos. Many got Hospitalized, Train Coaches were set afire, and one was murdered in Cold Blood by Maharashtra Police. Maharashtra Nav Nirman Sena were torchbearer for this REVOLUTION .Bunch of Activists. Goons I must say. And they are also a “Sena”. I wonder why aren’t all these Senas fighting Terrorism in Kashmir and Assam?

Again, Media was active. “Ye Desh Kiska Hai” was the new topic. Media Covered Raj Thackeray as if he was Hero of Maharastra. Raj Thackeray dared Govt to arrest him. "If Raj is arrested, entire Maharashtra will be set on fire," he said. Congress Govt preferred to be mute. Spineless. India moves on. Again.

And now Varun Gandhi. He said "If someone slaps you, what do you do? (They say) turn the other cheek ... I haven’t heard a stupider thing”. Why in the Hell he uses the “Gandhi” as his last name if he hates Mahatma Gandhi so much. Most of us have seen the rest of the video clip. I have no desire to quote what he said regarding some community. Everybody has either seen or read. But what really hurts is that he is being hailed as Hero by few people. Bal Thackeray and Muthalik are front runners. Video Clips, considered as evidence, have been declared as “Doctored”. BJP is criticizing Election Commission for acting tough. Congress got a chance to criticize BJP. Media got a new topic. India is again moving on.

And now The Icing on the cake. IPL has been moved to South Africa. India does not have enough Para Military forces to provide security for cricket matches and Elections at the same time. A nation of over 1 Billion, after 60 years of Independence and with world’s 3rd largest Army is INCAPAPLE of hosting two major events. Jai Ho.If they can provide security for Elections , why cant they provide for IPL. And I am not talking about Indian Dream of Organizing Olympics in 2016.Not even about dream to be Super Power by 2020.

I would have surprised many of my friends with this blog. Coz I have been know as someone who loves movies n cricket and doesn’t care about anything else. But I was sick at reading the pathetic headlines on indiatimes.com, hindustantimes.com. Some headlines were really disgusting to read. And as I am writing this Blog here is the latest headline from ndtv.com

Varun's 'hate speech' makes him a big craze in BJP

How to tolerate this nonsense? I dont have any answer . Not right now.

Many would disagree with what I have written. They are welcome with their comments . And offending any of my friend would be the last thing in my mind. So my apologies if I have offend anyone.

Regards

Best Bollywood Movie Of The Year 2008 Is...

As the year ends ... and the one which wont be remembered a good one for Bollywood.. I would take an opportunity to analyze the movies released this year ,that I have seen.

If this particular movie would have been released In India... or by any chance would have been produced by an Indian ..... there was no doubt that I would have CROWNED this one as the best movie of the year. And I am talking about "Slumdog Millionaire" .

"What a player !!!" . Chuckles Anil Kapoor in the movie. I would say 'What A Movie" . Simply Great !!.
I loved the way Movie was conceived. A game show. A Rs 20 Million Prize. 15 Questions. And he had the answer to most of them. Not by Genius. By Destiny. It was just that his life leading to that Hotseat had answered him even before he knew the questions. Answer to each Each Question, a part his life. That's Destiny. Superb.

And here In US , Oscar talks are on. And its a Clear Leader. I just hope it wins.

Coming back to Bollywood.

Even though I have started writing this blog, I haven't yet decided my Top Ten List of Bollywood Movies for this Year. Shall I go for Top Ten? I guess not. It would be tough job. And I don't want an entry just for the sake of it. Best Five looks good.So chance are that I may miss something in my list. But as they say..'If you cant remember, don't try for the sake of it'.

The movies that I will be listing would be the one that made Impact. I wont go just for Great Direction, Great Story, Great Acting.....and all other Technicalities. My listing are based just On Impact of the movie, when you are watching and/or thereafter.

Well the one movie that comes to my mind when I write the word "Best" as prefix is "A Wednesday". Anupam Kher. Great Acting, with Simplicity. Great Narration too. Naseeruddin Shah. The Common Man. Great Job. Great Dialogues. My Favorite "Koi ******* Button Daba ke ye Decide Nahi Karega....... ". You don't hear the F word been used so effectively In Bollywood.
Even Jimmy Shergill delivered his best .There were loopholes . Some Illogical subplots (Actor being threat, A common man smarter than Police Hacker). But as Naseer says in film ,"Maine Tareeke Nahi Nateeje Ki Baare Me Soch Raha Hoon". The film relies on this. And it makes an Impact.
Great Movie. Good Job.

I hated this movie. I was let Down by SRK when I was watching this movie. I expected a lot ?? Or I didn't expect him to be different?? Cant say. But when I think about this movie I feel, It was good. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Good to be loved. Good to be different. And SRK. I love him. Film had my Idealogical Differences. But It had beauty to make me believe that I was wrong. In all Surender Sahani was common man. He behaved the way a simple man with self honour would behave. It was one of the movie when you should not expect Raj or Rahul to sing and dance. The film had Cliches. Irrelevant scenes (Bike Chase, Sumo fight, too much use of word 'Rab'). Which film doesn't have those flaws ""Taani Partner"" !!!. But it succeeded in capturing the simple , beautiful moments of life. A Husband hesitating to leave a Rose for his wife on table even though he dances with the Tiffin Box served by her. Well do watch it. Its worth.

Farhan Akhtar. He shares his last name with me. But that has nothing to do with my listing his movie in my best ones. Good work Farhan. Great Director. Good Actor. And Inspiring Singer. Rock On!!! There have been times when an Inspirational Movie in Bollywood meant, Hero winning Heroine, Hero Overcoming Villain. Well."Aur bhi Gham hai zamane me Mohabbat n Unke Dushmano ke siva". Rock On !!! succeeded where others have failed. It Inspired. It Inspired to be friends. Friends Forever. It Inspired to believe In yourself.
And the songs. Totally new to Bollywood, but they Rocked. Yes there were a few subplots inspired from another Milestone movie "Dil Chahata Hai", but they were used for good.
In the end movie said "Rock On !!! no matter what Song Is On.". And we did.

Well I started with List Of Ten. Then came to listing Five. And now I wonder , did i like any other movie as I loved these? I guess not.

So the final in my list::
A Wednesday, Rock On and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

But on any day I will go for "Slumdog Millionaire" .

Rab ne Bana Di Jodi

Since the Release dates for this much anticipated movie were announced and since I saw the Promo for the first time . I was sure that I have to watch this before I receive any review. From any Nikhat Kazmi, Khalid Mohammad or even Taran Adarsh or any XYZ. But I had to move to New York and .... I couldn't resist myself reading their review as there were timing difference in Release over here .

Nikhat Kazmi was usual Herself. I donno why Her Ratings dont match her Reviews. Then there we have Khaild Mohammad. He is good. At least he knows what he writes. According to him this was one of the most Accomplished performance by SRK. I agree. He wasn't hamming .. he didn't Overact. Even wen he did .. he had rights to do so.. as his character demanded.. SRK rarely had this luxury in the past.

Then there was Taran Adarsh. I guess he wasnt is good mood when reviewed the movie. I even Had a chance to watch his review on TV. What he said about the movie, you at time can agree with it , if you are in mood of argument. But he was totally wrong in Declaring . Yes Declaring , is was in such a command wen he said that " business in India will totter, tremble and fumble after the initial weekend'.

How can you do that? You cant challenge a SRK-Yashraj Combibation on Boxoffice no matter wat the content of Movie is.

I always knew , whatever Contents movie had ... its gonna succeed. If SRK can carry Main Hoon Naa. He can carry anything. And he has proved more often than not.

So here I was set to watch . The Most anticipated Movie of the Year. The problem that I had was... Where? I was new to Jersey Cuty. It has been hardly 3 days I have been In here. Earlier I was in New York. And New York has that Special Charm where She allows herself to get more close n familiar to anybody without asking much. The Subways, The Maps. The People. They all Conspire to get what You want from the City. So watchinh the Movie In New York wasnt a thing that reqired ay effort. You just Go and Watch.

But I was in Jersey City. And Going to NY wasnt the rite Option with the kind of Travel Option s I had. No Subways you Know.

You know the famous Cliche. "Where there is Will There Is A Way". Cliche . But it works. And it worked for me too. A Longtime Friend Came to my Resue. Guess Who . Google. Yes, if u are travelling outside India, Google is not marely a search site. Its a part of Life and necessity.

You get answers to almost everything. All you should know what to ask for.

So here I was with the Address stating
: Phoenix Theater, Columbia Park, Jersey City . And 3:30 PM show. I was excited. Excited like a Teenager falling in Love for the first time.I do that everytime I go for a SRK movie.
It wasnt very cold , like its today. Instead it was all Sun Shining making up like a perfect day. Inviting me to raise my Hopes for the Movie. The bus ride was fine. Ans within 15 mins , I was there . Not exacltly to the theatre . But to the Columbia Park. Now finding the theatre In that Park was another Fun. I could see with the help of Sign Boards, how to go there by cars. But what abt the bare footers. I had to walkinh around all over the park and then go the basement Parking to the Sign og Box Office.

Tickets were cheap. $6.5. Almost half of what it would have cost me in NY. Even though the movie was running in Screen Two, I was amazed to see the number of Screens in that multiplex. 12 to be exact. We hardy see 7-8 Screen back there in Indian Multiplexes.

Anyway.
Although I used to read alot about the overseas Business of Bollywood Films, I was surprised to see only around 40% attendence for the SRK film. An irony for the Biggest Bollywood Overseas Star I guess. I donno may be that was an Off Day for him.

Well I will continue with my experience .. wen i write next.
