Recent Trends In Bollywood.

They say Trends change with time. But with Bollywood its the phenomenon of 'Trends' that Stays. Be it 'Action' of Early 90s or the 'Rebellion' of 80s or the 'Lost & Found' of 70s.

These were Major Trends that Lasted for many Years.

But things get interesting when some other 'Trends' get in. In early 90s as the 'Choli' became hit we saw a 'Trend' of 'Double Meaning Songs' with words like 'Khatiya, Charpai, Rajai' used at will by the 'song writers'. And they were hit. The songs at-least if not the films.

Then we had hordes of 'Family & Friendship' movies set in foreign locales following the trendsetters 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun', 'DDLJ' & KKHH'. And yeah most of them had a 'Charwa Chauth' and the Climax revolved around Shaadi Ka Mandap.

Then arrived Sunny Deol's Pak Bashing , High Decibel Patriotism Theme. Gadar was the Trendsetter. Indian, Zameen, Hero, Maa Tujhe Salaam, etc followed the Victory March.

Bollywood plays safe. Its just follows what sells.

In Early 2000s Neha Dupiya , in her aura of Julie, famously said 'Only SRK or Sex Sells' . And we had Jism, Murder, Khwahish, Julie, Girlfriend, Kalyug and many other low budget thrillers lined up in theaters.

Bottom-line, Bollywood Trends !!!

Here I have tried to capture the recent trends in Bollywood in the last few Years.

Munni/Sheila Name-Shakes

I was watching Chikni Chameli yesterday. And that prompted me to write this Blog. I mean how many more 'Name Themed Item Numbers' are  we going to have?
First Munni wooed us. It was rage. Then a 'Sheila' thought of making way in our hearts. And we did open our heart for her.

But that was the like opening floodgates. Suddenly we had Razia, Jalebi, Shaalu, ChamakChallo and now Chameli knocking our doors.

No one should be surprised if they find all these 'sought after' names in a Group of Girls in North India.

Six Pack Showrooms

Seen Murder 2's First Look?
When Emraan Hashmi thinks that his Lips are not just enough to woo the audience then you know Six-Packs are a must now.

Started with SRK ?? Aamir took it to new level with his 'Short Term Memory Loss' act. Yeah, he got Eight. Two more than SRK. And then everyone followed . John, Akshay, Shahid, Emraan. Even Ajay 'Singham' Devgan flaunted it.

Ali Zafar says Six-Pack are not his Priority. I bet in few months his priority will change.

Sequel Mania

One may debate when did it actually start. Krishh or Dhoom 2 or Munna Bhai?  And while we are actually debating I heard that David Dhawan is planning sequel to 'Aakhein' . Well , why not ? If Dharmesh Darshan can think something about Dhadkan 2 then why not David.

Well ... Sequels are 'In Thing' now in Bollywood. Everyone wants to have a safe 'Franchise'. This concept works amazingly well in Hollywood. So why not Bollywood !!!

Golmaal , Dhamaal, Race, Dhoom, Krrish, Don, Bheja Fry, Sarkaar and most loved of all our 'Munna Bhai'. All these have been doing great business tempting other filmmakers to follow the Trend.

Karan Johar has promised that there would be no sequel to Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghaam. That's a Relief. I wish SRK promises the same about Ra.One !!!

Comic Chaos

Get 3-4 Guys. Have 1 or 2 Pretty Gals. Throw in some jokes. Vulgar. Gay. Dirty . Stale. Senseless. It doesn't matter. And yes don't forget to rope in Paresh Rawal. Director ? Dont worry about it. Its either Priyadarshan or Rohit. If not then surely Anees Bazmee or Sajid Khan. And you have a money spinner masala movie for the audience who are looking for escapism cinema.

That's what, the Chaos , managed so smartly in  Hera-Pheri and Golmaal has started in the Bollywood. For Good or Bad? We can debate that some other time.

But Dhamal, Hulchul, Hungama, Welcome, All The Best, Houselfull, Thank You, etc have cashed in on this Chaotic Plot. But this one is turning out to be a Major Trend.

Multiplex Flicks

Hmmm.. I like this Trend most.

Get Together some Arthouse / Good Actors. Have a smart script. Invest Small. Release in Multiplexes. Earn Big. Win Critics Awards.

That's the mantra.

Even if you fail you are not out of business because your film didn't cost more than G.One Blue Suit with that Shining Hart !!!

Bheja Fry, Das Vidaniyaan, Chalo Dilli, Dev D, Udaan, Shaitan, Amir, A Wednesday, Love Sex Dhoka, etc managed to enrich the Bollywood collection by their Clever Film Making.

Looking forward to this one.
